Testing KG-696

Testing KG-696

I supplied power from the Heathkit power supply (the 9-volt battery connector is broken...I will replace that) and used the Sony radio to pick up the signal. The output of the KG-696 is by way of an RCA connector. I just looped the RCA lead over the Sony antenna.
The unit worked spot on and provided a nice zero beat on the Sony.

Bill Patrick is the MAN

Bill Patrick is the MAN

I have a lot to say about these photos, and I hope you will read this before viewing these latest captures of Pittsboro and Bynum.

I learned a lot about photography during this particular shoot. I was in a rather distressed state of mind on this day, going through a process of letting go of some things that I didn’t particularly want to let go of, and I went out to take photos and clear my head a bit.

My studies in martial arts, music, Buddhism and also in Chinese brushwork have taught me what an impact the mind can have on your perception of the world. In all of the arts I have pursued, I’ve always tried to follow the principle of abandoning the ego. When you are empty and free of ulterior motives, then you can really see the world around you for what it is, without any filtering of what you might want it to be. I remember in particular a brushwork class where we were all gathered at a pavilion outside, focused on the brush strokes and smooth execution, even breathing, etc. Suddenly an object fell from its place on a wall and crashed to the floor with a loud CLUNK! The teacher had us all stop and look at our papers- and there you could clearly see (on EVERYONE’S paper) a little extra drip of ink that flicked out in the direction of the noise- instant evidence of the operation of mind.

This day for me was an up and down struggle with mind, emotion, and ego clinging. There were many moments where I was so eager to get a capture, it was as if I sabotaged myself- poor focus, camera shake, bad angle, and the like. I was leaping ahead of myself in many places, and didn’t so much take the time to settle into the moment and be there with the environment, listening to what it was saying as opposed to trying to say something about it in my photos.

In art as well as life, I am much more concerned about the process than the end product. It is in that spirit that I have posted some photos here that I might not otherwise have posted, in particular several that have some quite obvious focus flaws. My interest here is sharing with my friends the process of my photography, and a bit about the internal process that goes with it- I’m sure we all have much in common here. I’ve included a couple self portraits as well, with twofold purpose- both to capture a bit about what I was feeling during the shoot, and also because I was trying to figure out how to use the timer! All in all the whole day was a very eye opening experience for me, and it is my hope that these photos will continue to give me access to the feeling of that day in my memory, and enable me to carry those lessons forward, both in life and also behind the camera.

Which finally brings me to Bill Patrick. It was in this cloudy state of mind, shooting photos in the ruinous (and somewhat hazardous) remains of the old mill in Bynum that I leaned out of a window for a photo and saw Bill standing there- I was so sure I was going to be run off. But instead, Bill very warmly invited me to come down to the lower level and take a look around!

I was amazed to find out that below the wreckage of the upper part of the mill, there is in fact a fully functioning hydroelectric apparatus, and it was my extremely good fortune to be there during one of the sparse times where Bill (who hails from Georgia I believe it was) was on site working with the equipment. I learned two very important lessons from him that afternoon- first, that ANYONE you meet is likely to have an amazing story to tell, and second, ALWAYS bring a pen and a pad so you can get it all down correctly so you can pass it on… so I’ll do the best I can from memory (Sorry Bill!).

It seems that the mill has been in continuous operation since some time in the 1940’s. There are actually two sections to it. The upper section is privately owned. Most of these photos are of its remains, long ago vandalized and thoroughly burnt to bits. The owner was forced to tear most of it down due to safety hazards (any way you slice it I would definitely watch your step, whatever you do). The lower section, where Bill was working, actually was the hydroelectric part. The mill sits directly on the Haw River, and just outside the gate there is an old bridge that is now designated for foot traffic across the river. This is all accessible from US 15-501, between Chapel Hill and Pittsboro.

Bill was telling me about the self sufficiency of the mill and the little village that sprouted up around it, that people used to go into town basically only once every month to stock up on supplies, but that the general store in Bynum and the mill itself (which was actually a grist mill if I recall correctly) pretty much provided all the basics for everyone. Standing in the quiet of Bynum with the sound of the river, the wind, and the birds, I can really imagine what a simple and pleasant life it could have been.

Bill’s teenage daughter is into photography, and is lucky enough to be playing around with an older SLR camera, so

A martial arts studio could use this datasheet to explain specifics about the studio along with information about classes offered. There are many elements used throughout the brochure that make it an avant-garde design- the color palette, triangles, type treatment, paint splatters. The powerful use of triangular elements in both geometric shapes and the shape of the text boxes gives the datasheet a feeling of movement, which successfully conveys the core objective of martial arts.

Bloomfield Hardware Bloomfield, Ind.,

Bloomfield Hardware Bloomfield, Ind.,

Derek and Mandy Rollison and their daughter, Taylor, operate Bloomfield Supply & Hardware in Bloomfield, Ind.

Growing the Business in New Ways
Bloomfield Hardware Discovers a New Partner

You might call Derek Rollison an accidental retailer. Working in the land management business, he didn’t have any particular aspirations to a life in retail. But he saw a need and an opportunity, and more than anything, it was a challenge he felt he could handle.
Bloomfield Supply & Hardware was located in a shopping center in Bloomfield, Ind., that had been started by Rollison’s grandfather 35 years ago. His grandfather’s sister and brother-in-law had operated the store for 13 years, then his grandmother’s sister and husband took it over and ran the business for the next 22 years.
“It was distressed. I didn’t want to see it go away, so I took over,” explains Rollison. He took control on February 8 and one of the first things he did was go with House Hasson Wholesale Hardware as his main supplier in place of Ace Hardware. “I had probably seen the House Hasson Wholesale Hardware rep, Chris Kirwer, ten times more often than I saw my Ace rep,” Rollison says. “I saw the difference between the two companies right away. With Ace we were on our own, while with House Hasson Wholesale Hardware I felt like we had a partner.”
He needed a lot of assistance from his new partner to whip the business into shape.
David Helfenberger helped him come up with a plan to reset the store. “House Hasson Wholesale Hardware had as many as four or five people here helping out for about a month. We had to change a lot of stuff around,” Rollison says.
A big section of the store was not being used, so 2,000 square feet of space was added right away to make the total salesfloor 8,000 square feet. “Our plumbing area was too small, but that meant we had to move the electrical department and so on. Overall, the conversion process went fine and everyone at House Hasson Wholesale Hardware was very helpful,” says Rollison, who is joined in the business by his wife, Mandy, with occasional help from their 10-year-old daughter Taylor. The couple also have a six-month-old son.
The service counter was the same way it had been for the past 35 years, so Rollison completely redid that while also installing new flooring. The renovation cleared room for even more space in the front of the store, which was used to make a showcase area for commercial mowers.
“We had space for outdoor power equipment, so we thought we might as well use it,” he explains. He added Dixie and Skag mowers and Echo outdoor power equipment and began promoting the availability of parts and accessories as well as a repair service. Rollison ended up selling 29 commercial mowers this past year, which is not bad in a town of 2,500 people.
Although he was new to retail, Rollison understood that retail success comes from finding ways to build customer traffic. First, he had to overcome the past history of the store, which was viewed as a last-resort, convenience stop with an underwhelming selection of products. “We have to make sure we have what people need,” he stresses. “Plumbing and electrical have turned into big departments, because now we are a go-to place for big plumbing and electrical projects.”
The same goes for the paint category. “The paint side had been weak, and we wanted to be in the paint business,” Rollison explains. So he went at it in an aggressive way. He bought a local Pratt & Lambert paint store and hired the old owner to run his newly enhanced paint department. Right now the store’s sales split is 50-50 with pro and consumer business, but he plans to start targeting paint contractors now that he has more to offer them.
Although the heavy remerchandising work is behind them now, Rollison knows he still needs to pay close attention to his assortment while recognizing and capitalizing on opportunities. “We have to figure out what to expand in and what to get out of or shrink,” he says. “If we decide to pursue something like wood furnaces we need to know if our customers will buy it from us.”
Rollison is discovering the various ways that House Hasson Wholesale Hardware can help him grow sales and profits. He signed up for the Benchmark pricing program and has been impressed with how functional and easy it is to use the CD Toolbox.
“We have to walk a fine line with our pricing. People compare us to the big boxes 25 miles away, so we have to stay sharp with our prices,” says Rollison, who hopes to use his POS system as a tool to make smarter decisions. “Keeping track of sales history will be key information to have and follow up on so we’re stocking the right items,” he adds.
He has been to two Dealer Markets so far and has found them to be productive and beneficial to his business. “You can find a lot of good buys. The best benefit was talking to all the factory reps,” he says.
As he approaches his first anniversary as a hardware store owner, Rollison is relieve

Fisherman kayak

Fisherman kayak

Designer: Bjorn Thomasson

The Fisherman12 is an efficient platform for fishing, hunting, diving, bird-watching, photographing, painting – but more than that: it is comfortable to stay out all day, fast and nimble to get you there in style and safe to keep you out of trouble.

The fully developed tunnel hull offers some interesting advantages for a hybrid canoe-kayak: foremost in stability, speed and tracking. The "pontoons" increase initial stability by moving the floatation further out from the centerline and deeper in the water compared to a traditional hull, making for a stable platform for stand-up casting and paddling.

Since the length-width ratio is an important part in the speed equation, two narrow hulls give a better top speed than one wide for the same displacement. Not that speed is top priority for a wide fishing/recreation canoe, but once in a while a little speed will be appreciated: a far off fishing ground, to get out of the way in a threatening encounter with reckless speedboat drivers or just to feel that it is not the hull that hampers the development of paddling skills.

Two narrow hulls also track better than one without compromising the superb manoeuvrability of the short hull. This, together with the speed advantage makes paddling longer distances a more enjoyable task than normally in this kind of craft. The Fisherman 12 is equally at home off an unprotected coast, in moving water or on an inland lake.

The tunnel is a useful work-area in front of the seat, and can be outfitted with equipment after fashion: boxes and storage for fishing or hunting gears, cameras etc. The seating position offered by an adjustable ergonomic seat on top of the tunnel and feet low in the hulls, gives you more power, range and balance when casting or fighting a strong fish.

The Fisherman 12 can be used without the seat attached, straddling the tunnel and leaving more room for stand-up paddling or poling over flats or upstreams, offering a superb view down in the water. With oarlocks attached, rowing is another option.

The large storage front and aft can be fitted with covers. A multifunctional accessory attachment system will accept whatever gear your activity demands. A trolling motor/rudder can be attached to the stern.

Fisherman 12 is more than a kayak/canoe – it is a versatile outdoor tool, pushing the envelope...

Edward Burtynsky, Highway #1, Intersection 105 & 110, Los Angeles, CA, USA, 2003, Chromogenic color print.

Edward Burtynsky was born in St. Catharines, Ontario in 1955. When he was eleven, Burtynsky learned how to make photographic prints in a dark room. He loved photography so much that he and his older sister started a small portrait business. Burtynsky graduated from Ryerson University with a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Photography. Some of his photographic influences include Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, and Carleton Watkins. He is known for exploring the relationship between industry and nature with his sweeping landscapes of images of manufacturing, mining, and oil industries. In 1985 Burtynsky started Toronto Image Works, which offers darkroom rentals, photography equipment, and courses. He was the subject of the documentary film Manufactured Landscapes shown at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival.

This haunting image of the Los Angeles freeway system is a masterly captured aerial photograph. The photograph is part of Burtynsky's Oil exhibit which illustrates the full life cycle of oil and its effects on our lives. The aerial views of twisting highways that Burtynsky's shot are just a few of the many powerful industrial images in the exhibit. Because this is a color photograph, it is amazing to see how variations of gray dominate the picture. It is apparent how the natural world has been taken over by this industrial world of asphalt. Despite the inherent challenges of aerial photography, Burtynsky's photograph is expertly composed with all the freeways intersecting right in the center of the photograph. The freeways are like giant scars on the landscape, and everyday millions of giant SUVs pollute the atmosphere as they sit in bumper-to-bumper traffic in the hot California sun. Burtynsky's photographs are definitely worth a thousand words, as they force the people to see the depressing ills that man has wrought on the landscape.

Every paragraph in each of the books are comprehensive, well researched, engrossing, and just plain fun-to-read, yet are packed with interesting ideas. You will be using your highlighter a lot! The best part aside from the content is they are very moderately priced. You can also purchase the whole 15 book series the isbn number is 0-910627-26-6. You are bound to get a great new idea to try on every page if not out of every paragraph. Do not be put off by the low price, these books really do deliver the critical information and eye opening ideas you need you to succeed without the fluff so commonly found in more expensive books on the subject. Highly recommended!

the secret chinese restaurant.

the secret chinese restaurant.

as i pass the basement windows of flats on queensborough terrace, there was one where i always saw food service equipment and at least 15 chinese people at any given time, eating. the building itself wasn't a hotel, and had no sign outside or any indication of a dining establishment inside. it remains a mystery.
