  • Protects the employee and includes such items as head covers, gloves, goggles, prescription safety glasses, safety shoes, handguns, batons, and handcuffs.

  • Safety equipment for making soap includes eye protection, a face shield, rubber gloves, and clothing to cover any bare skin that may be exposed to lye, including arms, legs, and feet. Ventilation equipment may be required when making large quantities of lye-water solution.

Who does this policy apply to?
The Head and Eye Protection policy applies to everyone working at West Campus and East Campus Steam Plants and the Steam Distribution Tunnels. This includes:
All Office of Physical Plant personnel
Contractors
Vendors
Visitors

Where are Hard Hats and Safety Glasses required?
Anywhere at WCSP, ECSP and Steam Distribution Tunnels with the following exceptions:
Inside Offices and Break areas including:
Boiler Operator’s room
Lead Operator’s room
Water Sampling room
Scale House
Offices
Locker rooms and restrooms
Training Room
Inside Shop Areas – Safety glasses are required when working on equipment

Does this policy apply only to Steam Services?
No. The Head and Eye Protection policy at Steam Services Facilities applies to all Office of Physical Plant employees. This is just one in a series of safety initiatives that comprise an overall OPP Safety Program that applies to all Office of Physical Plant divisions. Other initiatives include Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Respirators, Hearing Conservation and Foot Protection.

Are bump caps or vented hardhats permitted?
No. Only hardhats that meet requirements of the ANSI Z-89.1 Type 1 Class E or E&G are permitted. Bump caps and vented hardhats do not meet the requirements of this standard. More information on the types of hard hats is attached.

Where can hardhats that meet these requirements be obtained?
OPP Stores have approved hardhats in stock.

What type of safety glasses will be required?
Safety glasses must meet ANSI Z-87 standard. Safety glasses must have side shields or be of wrap around nature in order to meet the requirements of this standard.

What if prescription glasses are necessary?
OPP will provide one pair of prescription safety glasses one time per year. Employees will be responsible for the exam and fitting. The prescription will be used by the eye care facility to make the safety glasses. This will be handled through OPP Stores.
